RECENT STEPS TAKEN BY THE OFFICE DES PROFESSIONS DU QUÉBEC (OPQ) TOWARDS THE CREATION OF A PROFESSIONAL ORDER FOR OSTEOPATHS IN QUEBEC.
Last July 5, a meeting took place between Ostéopathie Québec and Mr. Jad-Patrick Barsoum, political advisor in the cabinet of Stéphanie Vallée, Minister of Justice responsible for the application of laws governing professions.
President of Ostéopathie Québec, Mr. Marc Gauthier, as well as the General Director, Ms. Louise Cantin, seized the opportunity to reiterate the urgency for creating a professional order, emphasizing on the absence of a legal framework regulating the osteopathic practice and the risks it involves for public safety.
The two parties also discussed the training of osteopaths in Quebec; the practice of osteopathy elsewhere in the world; and the relationship between Ostéopathie Québec and other professional orders.
Mr. Barsoum has been closely following all files under review by the Office des professions du Québec (OPQ), and confirms that work toward the creation of a professional order for osteopaths is progressing on schedule and is well ahead of other professional order creation projects. Our understanding is that it will require a bit more than two years to finalize the draft decree. Mr. Barsoum also made it clear that unity within the osteopathic community will be most desirable at the time the draft decree is tabled.
Finally, Mr. Barsoum added that the Minister of Justice will be very interested in receiving the Framework of competencies for osteopaths Quebec and recommends that it also be shared with the Office des professions du Québec, as well as with other professional orders.
On January 14, 2016, the Office des professions du Québec (OPQ) released a communiqué concerning the activities of the OPQ regarding the establishment of professional orders.

Ostéopathie Québec wishes to advise you that, at this time, no osteopathic school nor any osteopathic association has been informed of the nature of recommendations expected from the Office des professions du Québec.
Measures taken toward the creation of a professional order for osteopaths are still in progress and we cannot foresee, at present, how the process will unfold, particularly regarding the specific training that will be required, in the future, to obtain the title of D.O. We will keep you advised of any official decisions made by the government.
